The most prominent difference with the new knives are the handles, and not only cosmetically. "We had renowned functionality in our old knives, however the handles were too thick and bulky just to house them", says Product Manager, Jason Carpenter. "Our objective was to lighten up and downsize these brand new knives while keeping the present functionality. We also tried to make sure that they could be more easily identified as being grouped together."
The new handles on the Crater range are completely black, 60% glass-filled nylon. Expanse knives have a combination black and silver handle made from 60% glass-filled nylon and beefed up with stainless steel. By enhancing the handle scale/frame design, engineers were able to make them about 30% lighter and thinner than their original counterparts.
Blades:
Each series features 2.6-inch blades, (33-models). Crater series blades are made using 420HC stainless steel and Expanse series using 154CM. Each knife is supplied with a combination straight/serrated blade. This combination blade is shown by an "x" in the model name.
The Leatherman Expanse has been created for the most hardcore and demanding users.

Crater and Expanse series 33-models each have locking liner knives with state of the art Blade Launcher technology for swift deployment. Across both the Crater and Expanse models, users will uncover features like bit drivers, fixed screwdrivers, bit storage in the handle and carabiners that can be folded away into the handle.
